Joburg to its friends, and there are many of them, the city of Johannesburg, South Africa, has a very obvious appeal for visitors keen to explore the many dynamics of this important cultural, historic and commercial center. A big sprawling city, it is a place for driving rather than walking and there is an exceptional range of natural and cultural attractions at the end of any journey. The sheer range of attractions, aligned with a business district which could rival any other for architectural symbols of success, means the hotels Johannesburg has are not only well equipped to deal with large visitor numbers but also in meeting the very varied demands placed upon them.

Most visitors to the city will arrive via O.R. Tambo International Airport, the busiest in Africa and the main transport hub for South African destinations. From here it is a 15 mile trip into the city center. Picking up a hired car at the airport for the duration of a stay is the best bet for getting around, otherwise there are many airport taxis which will take inbound air passengers to their city hotel. Of course when staying in the best hotels Johannesburg has there will likely be an airport transfer shuttle service laid on all as part of the service. When driving, it is a good idea to familiarize oneself with the layout of the city districts to avoid getting lost as there are places which are best avoided.

Although a large city, it is not difficult to establish any particular location relative to the two main landmarks of the city skyline. These are communications towers, Brixton Tower, in the west of the city, and Hillbrow Tower, the larger of the two and located in the city center. A ring road system around the city center also helps in getting around. The main districts within which visitors will want to spend some time are Central Johannesburg and Soweto, between them housing most of the city's population as well as the bulk of the visitor sights and attractions. Most of the hotels Johannesburg has are located in and around the city center and they will have travel desks and information available.

A tour of Soweto is an increasingly popular activity, and a visit to the Apartheid Museum is a must for anyone wishing to explore some of the stark cultural and political dimensions of the city's past. There are many further museums and galleries, detailing almost every aspect of the city's cultural heritage and some African plant- and wildlife too courtesy of the Walter Susulu Botanical Gardens, the Lion Park, and the Montecasino Bird Gardens. It would be a mistake to think of the city purely as an urban sprawl as it has a great many green spaces and over six million trees. Shopping and dining may be the main everyday attractions for many visitors and there is ample opportunity to do both, often starting in the larger hotels Johannesburg has.

Some of the hotels are very large indeed, encompassing everything required for a superb leisure experience as well as offering first class facilities and services for business. It is a feature of most hotels in the city to accommodate business guests for meetings of varying sizes but the best equipped business hotels will likely be found in the vicinity of the main business district. The range of leisure features will be specific to any particular hotel but in the top luxury hotels Johannesburg has, expect world class facilities for dining, leisure, fitness and recreation. It is a city perfectly tuned too for those visitors on a budget who simply want a convenient base for a busy city experience.
